Facebook + School

I read the thing about facebook becoming a hub for businesses and school. Well, I'm not surprised. I think it's a fine idea. Facebook is kind of fun, and when you can make any obligation more fun, you will obviously enjoy it more and people will respond and participate more enthusiastically.

I think this frees you up as well. I can contribute to important discussions whenever I want. Also, it allows you jot something down when the idea is fresh in your mind, making it available for everyone to view and digest before you forget about it.

I think it would be great if there was a meeting in a couple weeks, and the boss says Ok, everyone post ideas on Facebook before the meeting and participate with one another. In that time, the people could feed off each other's ideas, allowing for collaborative thinking, which will be available at everyone's own convenience. It's great, in my opinion. I hope the company I work for could adopt something like this.

At my work we can go online, but many sites are blocked by Barracuda, like MySpace and Facebook. I am assuming this is because many companies do not want employees wasting time on these sites for social reasons. I am wondering, if Facebook was used as an office tool, how much time would actually be spent working? Wouldn't this open the door for employees to also engage in purely social activites? Honestly, if I had Facebook at work and noticed a friend sent me a message I would definitely take the time to send her one back...even during work.

I know this is not a huge issue, but it is just something I thought about. If I was not allowed access to the internet at work I would probably be more productive ALL the time...but, I do take time to check email, or look things up that are not work related...

I pray that Facebook and Myspace doesn't get blocked on the internet at my place of work! If that is the case, I will completely fail this class (plus be bored out of my mind all day).
However, I feel like that dreadful day is fast approaching. My employers are on lock down in every other electronic device, so I am sure the internet is next.
As for companies using Facebook to communicate, my company has started participating in online meetings where you sign into a chatroom and discuss matters there. I think with the way technology is going, the idea of a company social website is just around the corner.
